Meski novel lama, novel karya Iwan Simatupang ini tak akan berjarak dengan era kini, karena apa yang tertulis di dalamnya adalah persoalan manusia lengkap dengan khidupan dan kematiannya, yang terus ada pada. The present article is prepared, first of all, as a review of The Pilgrim (1975) a translation of, done by Harry Aveling, Iwan Simatupang's Ziarah (1969). However, to justify my objections to the translation, I have to devote a longer discussion on the nature of Ziarah, until it is no longer a review in a strict sense.
Translating a literary work with a high degree of individual styled) requires a specific treatment. The style should be translated as well, as what Richard Howard does in translating French novels belonging to nouveau roman, especially his translation of The Battle of Pharsallus (1971) by Claude Simon. The translation cannot be based purely on the command of the language. It also requires an understanding of the nature of a particular work.
